Best Places for Families to Stay in Amsterdam

If you and your family are planning a holiday to Holland this year and will be visiting Amsterdam, you will no doubt be considering places to stay.

The city is absolutely full of hotels, hostels and various other forms of accommodation, all busting at the seams in high summer and all spanning the spectrum of quality and reliability.

However, in this article, I am going to mention a number of options spanning three different price ranges of which I have first hand experience.

I’ve been to Amsterdam a number of times, and of all the places in the city I have stayed, the best I would consider for families is the district around the Leidseplein.

Many people will have a fixed idea of what to expect in Amsterdam before they arrive, and while the city certainly does have slightly unsavoury ‘adults only’ sort of areas, the Leidseplein and surrounding area is extremely family friendly.

The Leidseplein itself is a small square once used as a place for farmers to tether their horse and carts. It is now a bustling tourist centre with pavement artists, performers and families milling around enjoying the sites and sounds and perhaps relaxing with a coffee or cold beer at the pavement cafes near by.

In terms of accommodation, at the top of the price scale is the American Hotel, which is situated just one minutes stroll from the Leidseplein. This is an art deco upmarket style hotel and is a fantastic place to stay. Although prices may be steep, you can bag a reasonable price by booking in advance on their website.

Just around the corner on Leidsekade is the Hotel Kooyk. The Kooyk is a small budget family run hotel and is very friendly and welcoming. Bed and breakfast can be had for reasonable prices and the location is excellent for attractions and museums nearby.

If you are on a shoestring budget, International Budget Hotel is also located nearby and is a great low cost option.

Welcome to our little piece of the west. Not the wild wild west, at least not usually, but a very modern and exciting western world. It's fun to travel to different destinations, so lets begin.
