3 Top Texas Camping Areas For Memorial Day

Memorial Day is just around the corner. Many of us will be headed out to our favorite camping areas. This year, as in years past, many families will decide to go camping for the first time. Every year, I see beginners asking where the best places to camp in Texas are. The truth of the matter is, Texas is loaded with over 150 camping areas. And these are just the ones the State overlooks. It’s not counting the many private or for-fee camping areas.

Here are the top 3 areas that I like to camp when traveling in Texas.

Number one is Cagle Recreation area on Lake Conroe. This is a beautiful and quiet place to relax. It sits on the North end of Lake Conroe and you have access to all the lake recreation you want. Water skiing, fishing, boating and swimming. Lake Conroe has it all. Cagle has campistes for RV’s of all sizes plus a good number of primitive camp sites. It sits inside the Sam Houston National forest, so if you’re up for some hiking, bird watching or mountain biking, this is the place for you.

Balmorhea is an absolute gem that gets little attention. And I’m glad! Balmorhea sits in West Texas. The land around this area is rough and pretty much unchanged except for a few highways. There is a natural spring at Balmorhea and a pool has been constructed around it. It’s like an Oasis in the middle of a wild and untamed land. This Texas camping area has something for everyone including full hookups and shaded camping areas.

If you really want to experience the Old West the way it was before modern times, then get yourself down to Big Bend. This is probably one of the most rugged and untouched lands in the U.S. that I know of. It’s not for the faint of heart or for the occasional camper. No, Big Bend is for die hard, tough as nails camper. If not experienced in backcountry camping, then I’d try the other two places to camp in Texas mentioned above. But if rough and rustic is what you like, you owe it to yourself to head on down to Big Bend.

Welcome to our little piece of the west. Not the wild wild west, at least not usually, but a very modern and exciting western world. It's fun to travel to different destinations, so lets begin.
